.DISCUSSION...through New Year`s Eve.
The first wave of precipitation associated with this holiday system
is pushing through our eastern zones as it gets ready to exit our
forecast area. As we continue to see clearing behind this line of
showers, southerly winds will pick back up across the region with 40
to 50 mph wind gusts possible across southwestern Nevada, Mohave
County, and in the Morongo Basin where Wind Advisories remain in
effect through 10 pm PST this evening. The Flood Watch will be
allowed to expire at 4 am PST as the more substantial showers
producing moderate precipitation will have exited the area. As the
low pressure system off the coast of California continues to churn
drawing moisture northward, we will see another plume of moisture
impact the region today and tomorrow. This plume of moisture will
help to drive another round of widespread showers across the
region starting later today in our western zones. These showers
will gradually work their way across the region through Friday
evening into the overnight hours. Precipitation with these showers
will be on the light-to-moderate side of things when compared to
the Christmas Eve showers.
Over the past 24 hours SNOTELs in the eastern Sierra have picked up
anywhere from 2 to 2.5 feet from this holiday system. Another round
of precipitation will bring an additional 8 to 12 inches of snow to
elevations between 7,000 and 9,500 feet in the Eastern Sierra
today and tomorrow with locally higher amounts above 9,500 feet.
Meanwhile, the White Mountains are expected to pick up another 5
to 10 inches of snow above 7,000 feet with this second round of
showers. Unlike the first round of showers that moved through,
where the Spring Mountains did not see any impactful snow
accumulations below 9,500 feet due to high snow levels, the Spring
Mountains are expected to see some snow on Friday with this
second round of precipitation as snow levels fall below 8,000
feet. At this time, there is too much uncertainty regarding snow
totals in the Spring Mountains to issue any winter headlines as
snow totals in Kyle and Lee Canyons will most likely fall between
2 to 10 inches of snow.
Beyond Friday, we will see the aforementioned low pressure system
sweep through the area, scouring any lingering moisture from the
area on Saturday and leaving us under dry northwesterly flow aloft.
Temperatures will return to more seasonal values in the wake of this
system as we see 500 mb heights decrease. These cool and dry
conditions will continue through at least the middle of the week.
There are some indications that the next system to impact the area
will arrive in time for the New Year, but for now, the details that
far out are uncertain, so stay tuned.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Still
seeing a few light showers surrounding the Las Vegas Valley, but
overall, conditions will continue to improve. FEW-SCT060 with SCT150
expected this morning, but occasional SCT-BKN060-080 will be
possible during the day. Any showers today are looking less likely
and if they occur, they would generally remain over the higher
terrain. Some mountain obscurations this morning, but those should
generally clear after sunrise. Winds will be southeast around 5-8
knots this morning and increase out of the southwest 10-20 knots
after 19z.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Showers will exit Mohave County early this morning with
clearing skies through the morning hours. Most areas will see FEW-
SCT050-070 and SCT to occasional BKN100-120 through this afternoon.
The exception will be the Sierra Crest and eastern Sierra where rain
and snow will occur through the afternoon with CIGs around 5-8k feet
and localized mountain obscurations. Gusty south to southwest winds
over most areas today generally 10-20 knots, but areas in the Owens
Valley, western San Bernardino, and central Nevada will see gusts up
to 35 knots.
